Our History
Company 1
Scarsdale Fire Company One was founded on October 26, 1893, and applied for incorporation on November 14, 1893, under the name Scarsdale Fire Company. The incorporation was officially filed and recorded on December 26, 1893. On December 27, 1941, the name was changed to Scarsdale Fire Company One. The first meeting took place on December 30, 1893.
The original charter members were: Charles D. Immen – Foreman, Henry H.B. Angell – Assistant Foreman, Charles Immen Jr. – Secretary, C. Wm. Montgomery – Treasurer, Henry S. Marden, Sr., David Weed, James Slines, Joshua M. Sprague, Henry Marden and Charles W. Gaylor.
The year 1893 was a significant one, both locally and globally. The Columbian Exposition saw the debut of “Little Egypt.” Charles and Frank Duryea, two Frenchmen, invented the “gasoline buggy.” German inventor Dr. Rudolf Diesel created an engine that would eventually bear his name. Additionally, Thomas Edison finalized his Kinetoscope. In 1894, the Arthur Manor Suburban Home Company donated land for the first firehouse, located at 24 Sprague Rd. The firehouse was constructed for $2,475, a sum that is less than half of what it costs today to equip a single firefighter with personal protective equipment. The first piece of equipment presented to the company was a lantern, generously donated by the Mount Vernon Fire Patrol. The Sprague Road firehouse also played an important role in the local community, serving as a meeting space for several local churches, including Saint James, IHM, and the Congregational Church, while their own buildings were under construction. As the first volunteer organization in Scarsdale, the fire company set a precedent for many others that continue to serve the community today.
Company 2
The essential role of Scarsdale Fire Company No. 2 has changed little since its founding on March 8, 1915. It very much functions today as it did back then, when Company No. 2’s secretary R. C. Knickerbocker wrote the following in the Scarsdale Inquirer of May 12, 1920. “Scarsdale Fire Company No. 2 has completed its fifth year of voluntary service to the Village, working quietly and competently for the protection of life and property in Scarsdale. We are composed of 50 residents of Scarsdale who have voluntarily offered to serve our Village as firemen, and who at all times are ready and willing to assist our neighbors."
"When a fire occurs, and the lives of dear-ones and treasured possessions are endangered, the prompt attendance of men, drilled and experienced in fire-fighting, is of inestimable advantage. Yet many do not think of the disadvantage to these firemen who may have jumped from a warm bed into a cold wet night, actuated only by a desire to help others.”
While the training and tactics have improved immensely over the last 100+ years, the men and women of Company No. 2 are still motivated by the same hands-on desire to help our community and to bond with one another in a tight camaraderie.
Company 3
As the Village of Scarsdale transitioned into a residential community, neighborhoods began to develop, initially in the Village Center and Edgewood sections. This led to the formation of Scarsdale Volunteer Co. 1. Subsequently, Fire Co. 2 was established as the Green Acres area was developed. The establishment of Scarsdale Volunteer Fire Co. 3 paralleled the development of Scarsdale's Heathcote housing stock, ensuring the protection of the new real estate. Fire Co. 3 was officially founded on November 21, 1938, by 20 citizens who became its Charter Members.
According to its constitution, the purpose of Fire Co. 3 is as follows: "This organization, a non-profit sharing one, shall have for its object the saving of life and property from the ravages of fire. It shall act with the approval of and under the Board of Trustees of the Village of Scarsdale, County of Westchester, and State of New York, and in accordance with the Statutes of the State of New York controlling its duties."
